What is NDA Exam (National Defence Academy)?

The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is a prestigious examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit candidates for the Indian Armed Forces. Successful candidates are selected for the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, where they undergo rigorous training before being commissioned as officers.

NDA Exam Pattern

The NDA exam consists of two major stages:

  • 1. Written Exam (900 Marks)

    • Mathematics: 300 marks (120 questions, 2.5 marks each)

    • General Ability Test (GAT): 600 marks

      • English: 200 marks

      • General Knowledge: 400 marks (includes Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Affairs)

    2. Service Selection Board (SSB) Interview (900 Marks)

    • The SSB interview process is conducted in two stages:

      • Stage 1: Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test and Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT)

      • Stage 2: Psychological Test, Group Testing Officer Tasks, and Personal Interview

    3. Medical Examination

    • Comprehensive medical tests are conducted to ensure candidates meet the required physical standards.

    4. Document Verification

    • Verification of educational certificates, age proof, and other required documents.

Eligibility Criteria of NDA

To be eligible for the NDA exam, candidates must fulfill the following criteria:

1. Age:

  • 16.5 to 19.5 years

  • The candidate must have been born between specific dates mentioned in the notification.

2. Educational Qualifications:

  • Army Wing: 12th pass or equivalent from a recognized board.

  • Navy and Air Force Wings: 12th pass with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

3. Citizenship:

  • The candidate must be an Indian citizen or fulfill other criteria as specified in the official notification.

4. Physical Standards:

  • Minimum height: 157 cm (relaxation for candidates from certain regions).

  • Weight and vision requirements vary based on the force applied for.


 

Selection Process of NDA

The selection process involves the following stages:

  1. Written Exam:

    • Candidates need to score above the cut-off marks to qualify for the next stage.

  2. SSB Interview:

    • A detailed five-day process assessing the candidate’s intelligence, personality, and leadership qualities.

  3. Medical Examination:

    • Comprehensive medical tests to ensure physical and mental fitness.

  4. Document Verification:

    • Final verification of documents before admission to the academy.

FAQs for NDA Exam

The NDA (National Defence Academy) exam is a national-level entrance exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit candidates for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The NDA exam is conducted twice a year, typically in April and September.

Candidates must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of commencement of the course. No relaxation in age is provided for any category.

  • For Army Wing: Candidates must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination.
  • For Air Force and Navy Wings: Candidates must have passed 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics.

The selection process includes:

  1. Written Examination (Mathematics and General Ability Test)
  2. SSB Interview (including psychological, intelligence, and personality tests)
  3. Medical Examination
  4. Document Verification
  • Mathematics – 300 marks
  • General Ability Test – 600 marks (including English, General Knowledge, and Science)

Yes, there is negative marking. For every incorrect answer, 1/3rd of the marks assigned to the question are deducted.

The NDA training period is three years, after which candidates are sent to their respective service academies for further training:

  • Indian Military Academy (IMA) for Army
  • Naval Academy (NA) for Navy
  • Air Force Academy (AFA) for Air Force

Yes, since 2021, female candidates are eligible to apply for the NDA exam.

  • The NDA syllabus includes:

    • Mathematics: Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Geometry, Statistics, and Probability
    • General Ability Test: English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Affairs
